Probiotics

A probiotic is a live microorganism that when taken in adequate amounts, provides health benefits to the host, primarily by supporting a healthy balance of microbes in the gut. Often called 'good' or 'friendly' bacteria, probiotics help control harmful microbes, aid digestion and are found in fermented foods like yogurt and kefir and well as in supplement form.

Not all fermented foods are probiotics and the term probiotic is specific to microbes proven to provide health benefits, many fermented foods contain live cultures but are not clinically proven probiotics. So what is the best way to get probiotics into your diet? It is a healthy addition to include fermented foods into your diet as they can add benefit and diversity but if you are looking for the benefits probiotic bring to gut health then you need a probiotic supplement. However, not all supplements are created equal and unfortunatly most on the market are not incurring health benefits purely because they have not been clinically tested.
